Rupert Brooke

Rupert Brooke was born into a well-to-do, academic family; his father was a housemaster at Rugby School, where Rupert was educated before going on to King's College, Cambridge. The poem "The Soldier" is one of English poet Rupert Brooke's (1887–1915) most evocative and poignant poems—and an example of the dangers of romanticizing World War I, comforting the survivors but downplaying the grim reality. Written in 1914, the lines are still used in military memorials today.

Rupert Brooke had been staying in San Francisco for a few days. He makes no mention of what he was doing in Berkeley, but it is possible that he made the ferry trip over from the City in order to witness an annual all-male Cal tradition being re-enacted that very evening: the Pajamarino.
