15/1/1992 · Cheever slowly and deliberately fills out the image of a suburban town, by setting character vignettes and then delving deeply into descriptive personal details. At first this effect is a bit off-putting, like a conversation going on a bizarre tangent; but Cheever's consistency and execution make it an effective (if unorthodox) prose approach.
